Two years have passed since Bob Saget’s tragic demise.
The 65-year-old Full House star was discovered dead in his hotel room at The Ritz-Carlton Orlando, Grande Lakes, Florida, on January 9, 2022. Saget’s death shocked family, friends, and admirers worldwide, even though it was later revealed that he had suffered serious head damage after an inadvertent fall.
In a statement to PEOPLE, Bob Saget’s wife Kelly Rizzo and his family said, “We are devastated to confirm that our dearly departed Bob passed away today.” “He was everything to us and we want you to understand how much he loved his fans, bringing laughter and live performances together to unite people from all walks of life.”
Saget was in high spirits and in the middle of his “I Don’t Do Negative” comedy tour in the days before his passing. Bob Saget was amiable with employees and other visitors while visiting Orlando, according to a source who spoke with PEOPLE. He was also “happy to take selfies with whoever asked in the lobby.”
He even held the camera when a few girls begged for a selfie, joking that his larger arms stemmed from being partially orangutan. He was kind. No entourage, no entitlement, no sultry demeanor,” the individual informed PEOPLE.
They went on, “He appeared healthy and content, carried his bags, and seemed energetic.” He was not a 65-year-old man in his movements. That explains why everyone is so shocked by it.
Five days later, friends, family, and costars, including Dave Coulier, Lori Loughlin, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, Candace Cameron Bure, Jodie Sweetin, and Dave Stamos, attended Saget’s burial.
Here’s all you need to know about Bob Saget’s death, two years after his untimely demise.
How did Bob Saget die?
Authorities determined that blunt head trauma from an unintentional fall in his hotel room at The Ritz-Carlton Orlando, Grande Lakes, was the cause of Saget’s tragic death. Six weeks after Saget’s passing, his family revealed the cause of his death in a statement.
The Saget family claimed in the statement that PEOPLE was able to get, “The authorities have determined that Bob passed away from head trauma.” They have concluded that he fell asleep after inadvertently hitting the back of his head on something. Bob’s was no alcohol or drug use.”
The Orange County Medical Examiner noted in Saget’s autopsy that the comedian had most likely fallen backward and struck his head after suffering fractures to the back of his head and the area around his eyes when he passed away.
Saget had posterior scalp abrasions, discoloration in the upper and lower eyelids from a skull fracture, subdural hematoma (a buildup of blood on the surface of the brain), subarachnoid hemorrhage (bleeding in the space that surrounds the brain), and subgaleal hemorrhage (the blood that forms between the skull and scalp).
Additionally, according to the autopsy, “nothing was located” in Saget’s room that “allows for a definitive conclusion” to be drawn regarding the cause of his fatal head injury. The report states that the headboard of the bed was lightly padded and set slightly out from the wall and that the majority of the suite was carpeted.
Although these were listed as “possible mechanisms of injury,” investigators also examined other furniture, including bathroom counters and marble end tables, and discovered no evidence of blood or hair. Saget is thought to have passed out in the restroom, falling backward onto the marble floor and injuring his head. It is thought that after regaining consciousness, Saget staggered into bed, where he passed away once more.
At the time of his passing, Bob Saget tested positive for COVID-19 and was taking the prescription medication clonazepam, which is used to treat anxiety, panic attacks, and seizures. Additionally, according to the autopsy, Saget had aortic atherosclerosis (plaque build-up inside the aorta wall), coronary artery atherosclerosis (damage or illness in the heart’s major blood vessels), and cardiomegaly (an enlarged heart).
When did Bob Saget die?
Saget’s body was not found until later that afternoon, however, it is believed that he passed away at 4 a.m. on January 9, 2022.
Where did Bob Saget die?
In his hotel room at The Ritz-Carlton Orlando, Grande Lakes, Saget was discovered unconscious. He had done a stand-up routine earlier in the evening and was last captured on camera when he got back to the hotel.
On the ninth level of the hotel, he was seen getting out of the elevator and strolling down the corridor. At 2:17 a.m., he went into his room and covered his doorknob with a “Do Not Disturb” sign.
After Saget failed to check out and his family was “unable to get a hold of him,” a member of the hotel security staff went upstairs to “check on his well-being.” Saget was scheduled to return home later that day. The staff member went inside the room when Saget did not answer the door and discovered the comedian lying in bed with “no pulse.”
Just after 4 p.m., the Orange County Sheriff’s Department dispatched deputies, and Bob Saget was declared dead at the site.
How old was Bob Saget when he died?

What were Bob Saget’s last words?
Following his stand-up show at Ponte Vedra Concert Hall, Saget met several people in the hours before his death. Rosalie Cocci, who manages talent at the theater, claims she overheard Saget lamenting his lack of energy and struggling with the aftereffects of “long-term COVID” in addition to hearing problems.
Cocci observed that despite his continued illness, Saget “didn’t miss a beat” in his performance and that there was never any slurring in his voice.
Then, after making the two-hour drive back to his hotel from the event, Saget ran across a Ritz Carlton valet who asked to snap his picture. Even though it was almost two in the morning, Saget was happy to take a selfie.
Saget shared content on social media in the final hours before passing away. Saget stated on X (previously Twitter) that he was once again “happy addicted” to performing and that he thanked the people who came to his event. In an elongated message, he shared a selfie he had taken on his stand-up tour on Instagram, saying he was “loving every moment.”
Regarding Saget’s last correspondence with his family, a source revealed to PEOPLE that following his stand-up performance, he “sounded happy” when he called to his wife “in the early morning hours on Sunday.” Later, Rizzo said that she had texted her husband that day, and that their “last conversation, last connection” had been a loving exchange.
“I was just so appreciative that everyone said, ‘I love you so much.'” In an interview with Today’s Hoda Kotb, she claimed, “I believe I said, ‘I love you dearly,’ and he said, ‘I love you endlessly.'” “I’m excited to see you tomorrow,” I murmured. And after that, you know, it was just love all around.
