The 2024 Grammy Awards were a glamorous, joyous, and spectacle-filled evening.

It’s difficult to argue against Taylor Swift’s meteoric rise in 2023. Time named her Person of the Year, and her record-breaking Eras Tour and her tumultuous relationship with NFL tight end Travis Kelce had hordes of admirers fixated on her. Swift has also created history with her Grammy this year.

With her win for Album of the Year for Midnights, the pop sensation made history as the first artist to win the title four times. She had previously shared the tie for the award three times with Stevie Wonder, Paul Simon, and Frank Sinatra. Swift accepted a Grammy record-breaking award from beloved Canadian artist Céline Dion.

Swift announced her next studio album earlier in the evening while taking the stage to win her 13th Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Album. The star said that The Tortured Poet’s Department will be released on April 19.

Aside from that historic occasion, Sunday night’s star-studded Grammy performance lineup was spectacular.

Legendary songwriter Tracy Chapman, who gained popularity in 1988 with his 2023 cover of the song, returned out of retirement early in the program to perform Fast Car with country music artist Luke Combs. The heartfelt ballad made the Grammy crowd stand up.

Renowned Canadian folk singer Joni Mitchell received wild applause and a standing ovation when she made her Grammy debut.

A chamber orchestra, Brandi Carlile, and the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer performed a jazzy, contemplative rendition of her hit song “Both Sides Now” while the singer sat in a chair made of velvet and gilded gold, surrounded by candles.

The most nominated artist of the evening, SZA, took the stage to showcase her characteristic buttery vocals while mash-uping some of her classics, including the revenge anthem Kill Bill. SZA was nominated for nine Grammy Awards this evening, including the top three categories of Album, Record, and Song of the Year. The R&B icon is nominated in all three major categories for the second time in one year.

In addition, Miley Cyrus took the stage to perform her Grammy-winning song Flowers, which had just won Best Pop Solo Performance.

In the middle of the performance, the former child star announced, “I just won my first Grammy!”

Later in the evening, Cyrus would win Record of the Year for Flowers.

For Once in My Life, performed by Stevie Wonder in honor of the late Tony Bennett, featured a video of Bennett performing the song. Bennett passed away in July of last year, aged 96.

Turn the Lights Back On, Billy Joel’s first new song in almost ten years was also performed live.

This year’s Album, Song, and Record of the Year categories, which honored the artistic accomplishments of Olivia Rodrigo, Lana Del Rey, Victoria Monét, Janelle Monáe, Billie Eilish, and the band Boygenius, were all dominated by women. The versatile multi-instrumentalist Jon Batiste was the only man nominated in these categories.

Their poignant song “What Was I Made For?” featured on the Barbie movie’s soundtrack, Eilish won Song of the Year.

Having hosted the ceremony for four years, Trevor Noah did so this year.

However, during the Premiere Ceremony, many of this year’s Grammys were given away before the awards ceremony. Killer Mike won three Grammys for Best Rap Song, Album, and Performance there in short succession. But as the well-known rapper was seen on camera being handcuffed and led out of the Crypto.com Arena by Los Angeles police, excitement soon gave way to bewilderment.

According to LAPD spokesman Officer Mike Lopez, a confrontation inside the arena at approximately 4 p.m. was the reason for Killer Mike’s incarceration.
